Rhythmix World

The Rhythmix World programme features indigenous music from across the globe including: African singing and percussion, the drums of South America, Asian influenced dance music and folk music from the UK. Rhythmix World workshops are about creating a music community and sharing the joy of music.

WORLD VOCAL Teaching unaccompanied songs from around the world. Singing in the a capella style offers children a chance to experience all aspects of song-making: singing not just the melody, but harmonies, backing vocals, the bass line/ rhythm section and the opportunity to solo. Content All sessions start with a vocal and physical warm up to prepare the voice for singing using a variety of fun exercises designed to develop the listening skills in the group. A simple song is learnt for singing in unison, to develop pitch and rhythm, moving on to more complex material through the course with songs in more than one part, to teach melodic and rhythmic independence. Songs taught are drawn from many different sources: African and gospel are particularly effective as they are upbeat and allow the children to move while they sing. Voice technique including breathing, posture, pitching and control is explored. Musical outcomes By the end of the course the children will have learnt several songs and short vocal pieces and been able to sing them back from memory, drawing together elements studied such as harmonies, rhythm and improvisation. A CD can be created. Other outcomes Can include increased co-operation within the group, disruptive or shy children joining in and improved concentration overall. There is an opportunity to use the course to develop understanding of other cultures.

WORLD PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE A course exploring Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, West African, Indian and Middle Eastern rhythms.
Content The course comprises several modules, including rhythmic workouts and warm-ups, ensemble drumming, drum-based composition and performance. Through an exploration of rhythm-based music from around the world, the workshops aims to develop listening and appraising skills, ensemble and team work, rhythm theory and some notation. Musical outcomes The project concludes with at least one performance to school and parents, with the potential for a CD recording. A range of skills are developed, from understanding rhythm to playing, composing and performing. Other outcomes Ensemble work places a strong emphasis on developing teamwork, leadership and self discipline as well as improvement of listening, analytical and reflective skills. |
