Rhythmix Create

Rhythmix Create workshops aim to challenge young people to think outside the box and to create their own new music. Centring around ambient sounds, film music, or creating your own instruments, Create workshops are an ideal way to engage some of our most challenging young people. |

YOU CAN BE A COMPOSER An introduction to composition, finding inspiration in places and experiences familiar to the participants. Content The children are given the opportunity to compose their own music using tuned and untuned percussion and other instruments that they are learning or the school may have available. They are asked to think about different places and situations, e.g. cities, storms, the seaside, a day at the zoo, and to create a soundscape of the different environments. This workshop offers good opportunities to link the origins of these soundscapes to other curriculum areas.
Musical Outcomes The project focuses on enhancing composing skills, group playing and widening awareness and interest musical styles. It culminates in a recording of the compositions, and could include an end of term performance. Other Outcomes Increased concentration and memory, improved group working and an opportunity for self-expression, often enabling different children to excel within the school environment. Strong cross-curricular opportunities. |
OUR TOWN A multi-media project which aims to represent and reflect the children’s local area through musical and visual response. The final outcome is a live performance featuring songs, sound pieces and a digital slideshow presentation. Content The sessions involve focussed listening exercises as a prelude to soundgathering expeditions to create a collection of soundbites from the local area together with digital photographs. The soundbites are uploaded into a sampler and then used as raw material for improvisation and composition by triggering samples using drumpads. In addition, the children’s feelings and responses to their town and environment are used as the basis for songwriting exercises which eventually culminate in a series of songs playable live using classroom instruments together with some Music Tech input. All this material is put together to create a performance which also features digital images gathered during the project. These are triggered live alongside the sound material to create a cross-media performance. Musical outcomes In addition to the creation of a final performance, this project will provide the following benefits: focussed listening skills will be refined; participants will gain an insight into improvisation and composition; they will be introduced to some of the creative possibilities of music technology. Other outcomes In addition, participants’ understanding and appreciation of their local environment should be increased, teamwork skills improved and interest in and experience of photography developed. |
